Pope's Visit to Kurdistan an Attestation to Our Common Values of Peace: Barzani
ERBIL - The historic visit by Pope Francis to the Kurdistan Region is an attestation to "our common" values of peace, tolerance, and coexistence in the region, Kurdish prominent leader Masoud Barzani stated on Sunday.

Barzani made the remarks following his meeting with the Pope in Erbil on Sunday morning where they exchanged views on the latest developments in regards to the diverse religious and ethnic groups living peacefully together in the autonomous region.


"Honored to receive @Pontifex today in Erbil. Pope Francis’ visit to the Kurdistan Region is indeed an attestation to our common values of peace, coexistence, and tolerance," Barzani wrote on Twitter.

The pontiff arrived at the Erbil International Airport where he was welcomed by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani during an official ceromony.

The Pope held meetings with the top Kurdish leaders, during which he reiterated that he did not forget about the Kurdistan Region and that he views the region as home to all components, thanking Kurdish prominent leader Masoud Barzani for protecting the components.

Barzani earlier welcomed Pope's visit in a Twitter statement.

"I warmly welcome His Holiness, @Pontifex to Kurdistan. His holiness's visit to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region is indeed historic, carrying the noble message of peaceful co-existence," he said.
