Thousands of masked revellers converge on St Mark’s Square in Venice for one of the highlights Italian city’s annual carnival, the ‘Flight of the Angel.’

Tradition dictates that a women in carnival attire descends from the bell tower of St Mark’s Basilica.

This year’s ‘Angel’ is 20-year-old Marta Finotto.

“It’s a beautiful, romantic tradition full of colour and atmosphere, it is really fantastic.”

The city is besieged by tourists from across Italy and the world for the duration of the carnival, which ends on February 12.
