First energy conference aims to develop energy sector in Kurdistan
The first energy conference in Erbil aims to develop the Kurdistan Region's energy sector.

The one-day conference is set to kick off on Sunday in Erbil’s Sad Abdullah Convention Hall.

The conference is expected to be attended by representatives from dozens of foreign and local energy companies, among them 150 Turkish companies who form a delegation headed by the Turkish Minister for Energy.

Adviser to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Trade Fathi Mohammed said the lion’s share of the attendants will be Turkish companies who will stay in the Kurdistan Region for two days following the conference.

After the conference, the Turkish delegation will meet with top officials from the KRG and look into investment prospects in the region, he added.

Turkish companies have been actively involved in the investment sector in the Kurdistan Region since the 2003 toppling of the former Iraqi government. The attraction of foreign investors has been mainly accredited to the region’s investment law, which has been described as one of the most investor-friendly laws.

Passed in 2007, the law provides incentives for foreign investors, including the possibility of owning land, up to 10-year tax holidays, easy repatriation of profits and the removal of tariffs on exports and imports related to projects.
