Sharp decline in groundwater level in Kurdistan Region

Sharp decline in groundwater level in Kurdistan Region
There has been a sharp decline in the level of groundwater in the Kurdistan Region, according to the region's Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.

WaterThe ministry has asked for the provision of drinking water and daily consumption from rivers rather than relying on groundwater.

Director of water resources Mohammed Amin Fars said: "The groundwater level in the region generally suffers a sharp drop due to consecutive years of drought and the arbitrary digging of artesian wells."

The decrease in the level of groundwater in some areas of the region from 2000-2011 has reached 100 meters, said Fars.

This sharp drop causes concern about the existence of groundwater in these areas over time, added Fars.
