Public referendum on PM' issue "acceptable" but not decisive, says Kurdish MP

Public referendum on PM' issue
Withdrawing confidence from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki should be carried out according to the constitutional articles which the political parties are now trying to accomplish, a Kurdish MP said.
"Any call to depend on the public opinion is acceptable by the public and politically but the political parties are about to withdraw confidence [from government] inside the House of Representatives," said Muayyad Tayyib, spokesperson for Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC).

Tayyib continued "we may resort to the public opinion when the executive authority is elected directly by the public.

"But the issue of withdrawing confidence should be carried out according to constitutional procedures."

Yesterday Sadr Current Leader Muqtada Sadr called for a public referendum on withdrawing confidence from Maliki.

Maliki's State of Law Coalition (SLC) has welcomed the call and insists that the voting should take place.

Some events in the past year as issuance of an arrest order for Iraqi Vice President Tareq Hashemi over terrorism charges, launching an arrest campaign against Iraqiya List members and issues between Erbil and Baghdad governments as well as Iraqiya and SLC resulted in strong critiques against Maliki's ruling method.

Key political leaders as Kurdistan's President Massoud Barzani, Iraqiya Leader Ayad Allawi and Sadr accused Maliki of "monopolizing" power and described him as a "dictator."

These leaders, now supported by some others, have staged a campaign to replace Maliki, after they warned him to end his "unilateral" ruling.

Iraqiya claims it has collected 164 signatures to withdraw confidence from Maliki inside the House of Representatives.

SLC MPs allege Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has turned down a demand by House Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi for withdrawing confidence from Maliki. Talabani is yet to announce his official position.
