President Nechirvan Barzani confirmed coordination with the United Nations to improve the situation of media in the KRG and to create an atmosphere of freedom to deal with the problems of the region.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Nechirvan Barzani confirmed on Monday coordination with the United Nations to improve the situation of media in the KRG and to create an atmosphere of freedom to deal with the problems of the region.

The Conference of (media, politics and democracy in the KRG towards more understanding between reporters and politicians) was launched on Monday in Erbil, the capital of the KRG region under the auspices of Nechirvan Barzani, the General British Consulate in Arbil and United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

In his speech Barzani said that they made great sacrifices in order to reach this day.

“We have to maintain these gains,” Barzani said in a speech at the opening of the conference.
The conference aims to discuss finding the best ways to develop media in KRG.

Barzani also noted that all international conventions emphasize the freedom of opinion and expression; there is no freedom without responsibility.

“This responsibility must be held on government solely but also on journalists, according to international conventions,” said also Barzani.

“The government should create the conditions for freedom of media and press through appropriate laws and decisions,” also noted Barzani.
