Lawmakers work to ratify child protection policy draft in Kurdistan
lawmakers in Kurdistan parliament are trying to discuss and approve child protection policy in the new parliament session, a lawmaker said.

“The problematic situation of Kurdish children needs a child protection policy. Despite of two child protection policy draft presented earlier to Kurdistan Parliament, Currently the region does not have a policy to ensure children’s safety and security” Kurdistan parliament member, Samira Goran told Peyamner News Agency.

“This draft is one of the most important policy drafts that should be discussed and approved in Parliament in a short period of time to protect Kurdish children’s rights. The lawmakers are trying to ratify this policy in its new session” she added.

The latest statistics show there are more than 12,000 child laborers in Iraqi Kurdistan, a figure seen as worrying for such a region that has a population of less than 5 million, sits on giant oil reserves, and has been hailed as economically prosperous and political progressive.

Child protection is a set of government-run services designed to protect children and young people who are underage and to encourage family stability.
