An Egyptian court sentenced 11 Muslim Brotherhood (MB) members to life imprisonment on Tuesday for acts of violence targeting the Egyptian army in the port city of Suez last month.

Five-year jail terms were handed out to 45 other MB members, but eight of the defendants were acquitted of charges.

The Islamists were accused of “shooting and adopting violent means” on August 14.

This followed a military crackdown in Cairo against supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, most notably in Rabaa al-Adawiya.

The group is facing its worst crisis since a similar attempt to suppress it in the 1950s, with the turmoil even destabilizing MB affiliate organisations in other countries across the Middle East.
