attack targets study center in Najaf, southern Iraq

Al-Rafidain Center for Dialogue, a center for research and political studies in Najaf Governorate, southern Iraq, was subjected to a missile attack today, Tuesday, in the third attack targeting the center in two years.

And local media said, "The headquarters of the Al-Rafidain Center for Dialogue in Najaf Governorate was attacked with an RPG, without causing any casualties."

Pictures showed damage to the facade of the center's building, while the official authorities did not issue any statement regarding the incident. The well-known center is located in the Al-Sawaq neighborhood in Najaf Governorate.

The Center defines itself as "an independent intellectual gathering that works to encourage political, cultural and economic dialogues among Iraqi elites with the aim of enhancing the experience of democracy, achieving social peace, and helping state institutions build themselves on Iraqi strategic foundations and visions."

The Center organizes forums that bring together Arab and foreign researchers to discuss the latest developments in Iraq and the region, most notably the annual Al-Rafidain Forum and the Economic Forum.

Since the beginning of the year, about 50 attacks have targeted US interests in Iraq, especially the US embassy in Baghdad, Iraqi military bases that include Americans, and the Baghdad and Erbil airports, in attacks often attributed to Iraqi pro-Iran factions.
