Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and President Nechirvan Barzani on Friday met with UN Secretary General António Guterres.

In the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani and President Barzani both expressed gratitude for the UN’s ongoing support, particularly through UNAMI, during the latest Iraqi elections and their continuous assistance in resolving disputes. The Secretary General was also briefed on recent developments.

The latest developments in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) was another topic of the discussion, with both sides emphasizing the real threat still posed by ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Both sides discussed the importance of cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad in facing terrorism, noting that, without stability, the political process in Iraq will be affected.

The Kurdistan Region’s attempts to hold elections on time, the Federal Supreme Court’s decision regarding the Kurdish oil and gas industry, and the possibility of the Secretary General visiting Iraq after the formation of a new government were other topics of discussion.
