Saudi Arabia has announced that it is engaged in talks with Syria to restore consular services, marking a potential thaw in relations between the two countries that were severed over a decade ago as a result of the Syrian civil war.

According to sources, the two countries have agreed to reopen their embassies. Following Syria's membership suspension from the Arab League in 2011, numerous Arab nations withdrew their support for the government and backed the anti-government forces.

However, recent visits by President Assad to Oman and the United Arab Emirates suggest that some Arab nations are looking to improve relations with Syria.
