Wikimedia Launches Sorani Kurdish Edition of Online Dictionary Wikiferheng, Calls on Kurds to Contribute
Wikimedia, the US-based non-profit organization, has launched an online dictionary in the Sorani dialect of the Kurdish language. The crowdsourced site, called Wikiferheng, is the latest addition to the Wiktionary project and aims to promote the Kurdish language and culture.
Sorani is the official language of the Kurdistan Region and is also spoken in Kurdish areas of western Iran. The Sorani edition of the Wiktionary has nearly 5,000 entries, with plans to expand it further in the future.
Wiktionary is available in dozens of languages, with Kurdish Kurmanji being the thirteenth largest with over 740,000 entries. The dictionary is also available in Zazaki dialect.
The launch of the Sorani edition of Wiktionary is expected to promote the Kurdish language and culture and make it more accessible to the world. There are several dialects of the Kurdish language, with Kurmanji being predominant in northeast Syria and southeast Turkey, and Zazaki mostly spoken in southeast Turkey by the Zaza Kurds.
