Kurdistan Region Implements Reform Plan to Boost Agricultural Sector and Promote Kurdish Produce in Global Markets

In a bid to enhance the agricultural sector in the Kurdistan Region and promote Kurdish produce in global markets, the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has embarked on a comprehensive reform plan. The government is actively implementing practical measures, including the elimination of export taxes, to support local farmers and facilitate the export of surplus fruit and vegetables.

One of the noteworthy initiatives undertaken by the KRG is the imposition of a restriction on the importation of cucumbers from abroad, further reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding local farmers and supporting domestic produce. This move has created a favorable environment for farmers in Spimal village, located in Akre province, which boasts a substantial cucumber production of six tons per day.

Yousef Bag Abdullah, a farmer with twenty years of experience in Spimal village, expressed his optimism about the future prospects of cucumber exports. He highlighted that the village currently caters to the demand within the Kurdistan Region and across Iraq, while also aiming to expand its reach to international markets. Abdullah emphasized the advantage of well-maintained transportation routes and praised the import ban on cucumbers, which greatly benefits local farmers.

The cucumber production in Spimal village is a vital source of livelihood for over 200 families and provides employment opportunities for thousands of individuals involved in various stages of the production process. From planting and harvesting to transportation and marketing, the community is actively engaged in ensuring the success and quality of their cucumber yields.

With successful exports of pomegranates, rice, sumac, and tahini to international markets, the Kurdistan Region is now setting its sights on further expanding the global marketing of grapes, apples, and honey produced in the region. These efforts aim to showcase the high quality and distinctiveness of Kurdish agricultural products on the global stage.

To promote Kurdish produce in global markets, local companies have been granted permits to export surplus fruit and vegetables. These products will carry the distinguished label of "Made in Kurdistan" accompanied by the Kurdish flag, serving as a mark of quality and authenticity.

By implementing these reforms and supporting local farmers, the KRG is fostering economic growth and sustainability in the agricultural sector of the Kurdistan Region. The vision is to establish the region as a key player in the global agricultural market, highlighting the richness of its produce and creating new opportunities for farmers and communities across the region.
