Turkish Forces Bombard Areas in Northern Syria, Injuring Syrian Soldiers and Civilians

Turkish forces carried out a bombardment in the early hours of Monday near Ain Issa in northern Syria, injuring two Syrian soldiers, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a war monitor. The injured soldiers were subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Syrian state media did not report the incident. However, the Syrian government has consistently called on Turkish forces to leave Syria, emphasizing its opposition to their presence. In response, the Syrian army has continued to strike areas under Turkish control in northwest Syria.

The entry of Syrian government forces into the countryside of Ain Issa and other towns in October 2019 was a result of a Moscow-backed agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) following a Turkish offensive in the area. This move aimed to establish control and stability in the region.

Furthermore, in 2019, US troops withdrew from Kobani, Ain Issa, and other towns, leaving their bases primarily in the Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor provinces.

During the campaign to liberate Raqqa, the former de-facto capital of ISIS, the SDF, with support from the US-led coalition, successfully recaptured the city on October 17, 2017.

Throughout this year, Turkey and its allied armed factions have conducted sporadic bombardments in Al-Raqqah and its countryside. Turkey has also regularly carried out drone attacks in northeast Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on July 15 that a female leader of the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) had died from wounds sustained on June 17 due to Turkish artillery shelling on Ain Issa Camp.

In another incident on Sunday, a civilian was injured by a Turkish drone in the countryside of Manbij in the Aleppo province, as per the data provided by SOHR. Since the beginning of 2023, Turkey has conducted a total of 27 drone strikes.

The ongoing clashes and hostilities between Turkish forces and various factions in northern Syria highlight the complexities and challenges in the region. The continued violence underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected civilian population.
