Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Meets Outgoing Canadian Ambassador to Iraq

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani welcomed outgoing Canadian Ambassador to Iraq, Gregory Galligan, on Sunday, as they discussed their countries' strong bilateral ties and ongoing collaborations. During the meeting, both officials expressed their commitment to enhancing cooperation and resolving outstanding issues.

In a statement issued by the premier's office, Barzani extended his gratitude to Ambassador Galligan for his dedicated efforts in strengthening the relationship between Canada and the Kurdistan Region. He also wished the diplomat success in his new endeavors.

Ambassador Galligan, who assumed his role as the Canadian envoy in December 2021, reciprocated the sentiment, expressing his appreciation for the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) cooperation during his diplomatic tenure. The meeting served as a platform to discuss key matters, including the upcoming Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections, efforts to resolve ongoing disputes between the Erbil and Baghdad administrations, and ensuring the preservation of constitutional rights for the Kurdish people.

Tammy Ames, the newly appointed head of the Canadian Embassy office in Erbil, was also present at the meeting, underscoring Canada's commitment to its relationship with the Kurdistan Region.

Canada's ties with the Kurdistan Region have remained strong over the years. The country actively participated in the global coalition against ISIS, providing vital support to the Kurdish Peshmerga forces that played a pivotal role in defeating the radical militants in 2017. Additionally, Canada has invested in trade and economic partnerships with the region, exemplified by the establishment of its embassy office in Erbil in 2014.

The meeting between Prime Minister Barzani and Ambassador Galligan underscores the enduring bond between Canada and the Kurdistan Region, characterized by mutual cooperation, diplomatic solidarity, and shared aspirations for regional stability and development.

As Ambassador Galligan concludes his diplomatic mission, his successor, Tammy Ames, will undoubtedly continue to nurture and expand the bilateral ties that have been established between Canada and the Kurdistan Region.
