President Nechirvan Barzani Receives Austrian Foreign Minister

President Nechirvan Barzani of the Kurdistan Region welcomed Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and his delegation on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. The meeting, attended by Kurdistan Region Vice Presidents, the Head of the Foreign Relations Department, and the representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Austria, covered various topics.

Discussions included Austria's relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Erbil-Baghdad relations, illegal migration to Europe, and the latest regional developments. President Nechirvan Barzani commended Austria's support for the Kurdistan Region and the continued direct flights between Vienna and Erbil. He also congratulated Minister Schallenberg on the reopening of the Austrian embassy in Baghdad and called for the establishment of an Austrian representation in the Kurdistan Region. Both sides expressed readiness to enhance bilateral relations across all sectors.

Minister Schallenberg emphasized Austria's keen interest in its relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and revealed plans to open a representation in Erbil. He highlighted Austrian private sector interest in investing in the Kurdistan Region. Both parties agreed on the significance of political and security stability in attracting foreign investments and promoting economic growth. They also stressed the need for multilateral coordination among European countries and the region to address illegal migration.

Regarding the issues between Erbil and Baghdad, President Nechirvan Barzani emphasized the importance of resolving these matters in accordance with the constitution and consolidating the federal system. He noted ongoing constructive dialogue based on mutual understanding to find solutions and overcome challenges. President Barzani further emphasized maintaining positive relations with neighboring countries and safeguarding common interests.

The meeting also addressed various other issues of mutual interest.
