Tragic Passing of Kurdish Teenager Armita Garawand Following Alleged Assault by Iranian Morality Police

The Kurdish community and human rights advocates are in mourning today following the tragic passing of Armita Garawand, a 16-year-old Iranian teenager, who fell into a coma after an alleged assault by Iranian morality police earlier this month. According to media reports, Ms. Garawand passed away on Saturday.

Armita Garawand, originally from Kermanshah but residing in Tehran, was on her way to school earlier this month when she reportedly faced a "physical assault" by members of Iran's morality police on the metro. The incident revolved around her choice not to wear a hijab, which is mandatory for women in Iran. The confrontation resulted in grave consequences for the young girl.

Reports indicated that Armita Garawand suffered brain damage and slipped into a comatose state while receiving medical care in a Tehran hospital. On Saturday, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) confirmed her unfortunate demise. Iranian state media, however, suggested that her condition might have been a result of fainting due to skipping breakfast and experiencing low blood pressure.

This incident draws painful parallels to the tragic loss of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who passed away while in the custody of Iranian morality police in September of the previous year. Amini's death sparked widespread public protests throughout Iran, where demonstrators demanded comprehensive economic, social, and political reforms in the nation.

Armita Garawand's death has reignited concerns about human rights and women's rights in Iran. It has prompted renewed calls for reforms to address these pressing issues, both within the country and internationally. Human rights organizations and advocates are closely monitoring the situation, hoping that her passing will not go unnoticed and will lead to further discussions and actions to protect the rights and freedoms of Iranian citizens.
