Local Authorities in Erbil Begin Mass Roundup of Stray Dogs for Neutering and Vaccination Campaign

In response to a growing number of reported dog bites in the Kurdistan Region's capital, Erbil, local authorities have initiated a comprehensive effort to address the issue of stray dogs. Over the past few months, approximately 1,600 stray dogs have been rounded up and placed in a dedicated shelter, where they will undergo neutering and vaccination as part of a mass campaign.

The shelter, constructed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) at a cost of 450 million dinars, spans 20 acres of land and is situated 15 kilometers from Erbil's city center. Erbil Mayor Nabaz Abdul Hameed confirmed these developments in an interview with Kurdistan 24.

The decision to address the stray dog issue comes in the wake of several cases of dog attacks on citizens, with over 300 such incidents reported in the past four months in Erbil Province alone. Unofficial estimates suggest that there are more than 21,000 stray dogs in the province, making it crucial for authorities to implement a comprehensive solution.

Erbil's Daratu sub-district is reported to have the highest concentration of stray dogs in the province, prompting a concerted effort to address the issue in this area.

The current initiative focuses on neutering and vaccinating the stray dogs, aiming to reduce their population and mitigate the risks associated with unvaccinated strays. It is a multi-pronged approach that aims to ensure the safety and well-being of both the residents and the dogs themselves.

Local authorities are collaborating to implement this program, emphasizing the importance of community safety and responsible pet ownership while also addressing the needs of the stray dog population. This mass campaign is expected to have a positive impact on public safety and animal welfare in Erbil Province.
