Iraqi Government Prioritizes Stability and Peace Amidst Regional Tensions

In a bid to steer clear of further instability, the Iraqi government has made it a cornerstone of its policy to avoid entanglement in conflicts, emphasized Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Fuad Hussein during the inauguration of the 7th Conference of Ambassadors in Baghdad. The event, attended by high-ranking Iraqi diplomats, the Prime Minister, and lawmakers, underscored the pressing concerns facing the Middle East.

Hussein stressed the perilous nature of the current situation in the region and reiterated Baghdad's strong interest in averting a descent into war. "It is the fundamental focus of the government's efforts," Hussein affirmed, reiterating their commitment to maintaining peace.

This statement comes at a time when the Middle East is witnessing a surge in tensions, particularly the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict which has raised fears of wider regional implications since October 7. Iraqi militia groups have issued warnings to Israel, threatening rocket attacks if what they perceive as "aggression" in Gaza persists. The besieged Gaza Strip has seen a devastating toll, with over 9,000 casualties, the majority being women and children.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, in attendance at the conference, reiterated Iraq's steadfast support for the Palestinian people. He emphasized that Iraq will continue to play a crucial role in promoting peace and will not be drawn into conflicts.

In recent years, Iraq has adopted a policy of "balanced approach" in its foreign relations, according to the country's diplomats. This approach aims to navigate complex regional dynamics while maintaining a focus on stability and peace.

Regrettably, the anticipated Baghdad Conference III, originally scheduled for late November, has been postponed due to "regional events." French President Emmanuel Macron was slated to attend the event, which aimed to address economic integration and regional stability.

As Iraq endeavors to safeguard its own stability and contribute to regional peace, the situation in the Middle East remains a complex and ever-evolving challenge for the nation and its leaders.
