Kurdistan Region Prime Minister and KRG Delegation Pay Condolences in Kuwait over the Passing of Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Sabah

In a diplomatic visit to Kuwait on Monday, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani led a high-profile delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to express heartfelt condolences on the demise of the late Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Sabah. The visit also served as an opportunity for Prime Minister Barzani to acknowledge and thank Kuwait for its ongoing cooperation and support in ensuring the security and stability of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

The Prime Minister, in an official statement from the KRG, expressed his deep appreciation for Kuwait's role in fostering regional stability. He highlighted the longstanding collaboration between the two nations and emphasized the significance of maintaining a strong partnership for the collective security of the region.

Prime Minister Barzani had previously conveyed his condolences via a social media post on Saturday, where he expressed sorrow over the passing of the Kuwaiti Emir, saying, "It is with great sadness that we received news of the death of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait."

In a separate gesture of sympathy, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani visited the Kuwait Consulate General in Erbil on Monday to extend condolences on behalf of the KDP and the Kurdish people.

Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Sabah had been admitted to the hospital in late November due to an "emergency health problem," as announced by the Kuwaiti court. The specific nature of the health issue was not disclosed. It was reported that the late ruler had traveled to the United States in March 2021 for medical examinations.

Sheikh Nawaf assumed the role of Emir following the passing of his half-brother, the late Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, in 2020. Before his ascension to the throne, Sheikh Nawaf served as Kuwait's Minister of Defense from January 1988 until the country's liberation from Iraq after the conclusion of the Gulf War in 1991.

The visit by the Kurdistan Region Prime Minister and the KRG delegation underscores the importance of diplomatic ties and mutual respect in the face of shared regional challenges.
