Iraqi Parliament to Discuss US Troop Removal in Upcoming Session, Human Rights Committee States

The head of the Iraqi Parliament's Human Rights Committee, Saud Saadi, announced on Monday that the removal of American forces will be a central topic in the upcoming parliamentary session. Saadi affirmed their commitment to formally request the withdrawal of the US ambassador in Baghdad, citing alignment with constitutional principles.

Saadi stated that the issue of removing Americans will be among the priorities addressed in the first parliamentary session. He emphasized that, while there is a constitutional gap regarding the removal of ambassadors, the president of Iraq holds the authority to dismiss an ambassador.

"The issue of sovereignty, independence, and the highest interests of the people should not be subject to political consensus," Saadi declared.

The head of the Human Rights Committee also revealed that the Iraqi parliament is scheduled to convene next week. He disclosed that three individuals—Shaalan Karim, Saleem Isawi, and Mahmoud Mashhadani—have been identified as potential candidates for the position of speaker of parliament. However, Saadi noted that these names are not final and may undergo changes.

Pro-Iran Hashd al-Shaabi has already initiated the collection of signatures at the Iraqi parliament, seeking the withdrawal of both US and Global Coalition forces from the country. Since November 2023, the Iraqi parliament has been without a speaker following the decision by the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court to conclude the tenure of former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi.
