Thousands Gather in Zakho to Protest Iranian Missile Strikes on Erbil

In a massive gathering on an early Sunday morning, thousands of people convened in the independent administration of Zakho to vehemently protest the Iranian missile strikes that targeted residential areas in Erbil on Monday. The attacks claimed the lives of at least four civilians and left six others wounded.

"The people of Zaxo want to send a message to the world that we are a peace-loving nation and we want peace. The attack on the citizens of Erbil is a terrorist attack," declared Guhdar Shekho, the supervisor of the Independent Administration of Zaxo.

Representatives of the people of Zaxo conveyed a powerful message to the United Nations, the Government of Iraq, and the international community during the gathering.

"Those who attack the Kurdistan Region are against the peace and coexistence that exists in the Kurdistan Region," emphasized one of the protestors, echoing the sentiment of the crowd.

Even members of the Christian community joined the protests, with one participant asserting that the Kurdistan region has always been a bastion of peaceful coexistence and has not been against any nation or components, deeming the attacks on Erbil unjustified.

This demonstration in Zakho follows several protests held in Erbil, Duhok, Soran, and various European countries, all expressing strong condemnation for the Iranian missile attack on the Kurdistan Region.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted the targeted strike on Monday night, hitting the private residence of renowned Kurdish businessman Peshraw Dizayee during a family gathering. Tragically, Peshraw Dizayee, his daughter, and two other guests lost their lives, while six others sustained injuries.

This recent act of aggression follows a similar incident in 2022 when the IRGC targeted the private residence of Kurdish businessman Sheikh Baz Karim Barzinji, CEO of the Iraqi Kurdish oil company KAR group. Sheikh Baz Karim Barzinji escaped injury in that attack.

The international community, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations, has strongly condemned these attacks, underscoring the need for a peaceful resolution to the escalating tensions in the region. Primary schools in the Kurdistan Region held ceremonies on Sunday morning to condemn Iran's missile attack on Erbil, further reflecting the widespread concern and condemnation of these acts of violence.
