Iraqi Parliament Postpones Speaker Election Pending Federal Supreme Court Decision

The Iraqi parliament, convened on Saturday, made the decision to delay the first item on its agenda, pertaining to the election of a new speaker, until the Federal Supreme Court provides a decisive ruling on pending legal claims.

In an official statement, the parliament announced, "The Iraqi parliament has postponed the first item of its agenda on the election of the speaker of the Iraqi parliament until the legal claims are resolved by the Federal Court."

The anticipated election aimed to fill the vacancy left by Mohammad al-Halboosi, who was ousted from the position following a dispute with a fellow parliament member. The circumstances leading to this election trace back to the Federal Supreme Court's decision on November 14, which nullified Halbousi's membership in the Iraqi Parliament. This ruling also resulted in his removal from the position of speaker due to allegations of manipulating the resignation of a Sunni lawmaker in 2022.

Since the court's verdict, Iraq's parliamentary proceedings have been without a designated speaker, highlighting the importance of the upcoming session. The decision to postpone the election underscores the parliament's commitment to addressing legal claims before proceeding with the selection of a new speaker.

The void in the position of the speaker has left a legislative vacuum, and the forthcoming session holds significant weight in determining the new leader who will guide the parliament through crucial deliberations and decision-making in the days ahead. The outcome of the Federal Supreme Court's decision will undoubtedly shape the political landscape and dynamics within the Iraqi parliament.
