Kurdistan Region Christians Denounce Removal of Minority Quota Seats by Iraqi Federal Supreme Court

Representatives of the Christian community in the Kurdistan Region voiced their condemnation on Friday in response to the Iraqi federal Supreme Court's ruling, which ordered the removal of quota seats allocated for minorities from the Kurdistan Region parliament.

During a press conference, the representatives expressed their dismay at being caught in the crossfire of political conflicts between Kurdish parties. They vehemently criticized the Federal Court's decision, labeling it as unjust and a violation of the rights of minority communities.

"We have become victims of the political conflict between the Kurdish parties," they asserted, highlighting the detrimental impact of the ruling on minority representation in the parliament.

The representatives emphasized the importance of restoring their rights and issued a resolute statement, declaring, "We will not remain silent and urge the international community to take action."

The ruling, issued on February 21, saw the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq decree a reduction in the number of seats in the Kurdistan Region parliament from 111 to 100. Notably, this reduction included the elimination of eleven seats that were specifically designated for minorities within the Kurdistan Region.

The decision has sparked widespread concern and discontent among minority groups in the Kurdistan Region, who view it as a setback for their representation and participation in the political process.

As tensions escalate following the court's ruling, the Kurdistan Region's Christian community stands united in their demand for the restoration of their rightful representation in the parliament, calling on both regional and international stakeholders to address this issue and uphold the principles of democracy and minority rights.
