Perilous Paths: Kolbars' Plight in Border Regions Amid Iranian Crackdown

In the rugged borderlands between the Kurdistan Region and Iran, the haunting saga of the Kolbar persists, marked by a relentless onslaught of fatalities. Over the past decade, more than 589 Kolbars have succumbed to the perilous realities of their trade, with an additional 1,617 enduring life-altering injuries, predominantly at the hands of Iranian security forces.

Driven by dire economic circumstances, including rampant unemployment and soaring poverty rates exacerbated by the inflationary spiral gripping the region, Kolbars embark on treacherous journeys. Laden with burdensome loads, they traverse hazardous mountain terrains, smuggling goods across the border to eke out a living.

Yet, the toll exacted by this precarious existence is staggering. Recent reports indicate that in just one week, approximately 20 Kolbars fell victim to direct gunfire from Iranian security forces. The first quarter of the current year has already witnessed the loss of 41 lives, with 292 others sustaining injuries under similar circumstances.

The year 2023 stands out as a particularly grim chapter, with over 341 Kolbars falling prey to violence, including 22 individuals below the age of 18, as documented by the Human Rights Organization Kurdpa.

Statistics lay bare the grim reality faced by Kolbars on a daily basis. An overwhelming 87% of deaths and injuries are attributed to direct fire from Iranian security forces, while 4% result from brutal beatings and violence. Tragically, mine explosions claimed the lives of 3.5% of Kolbars, with 1.5% suffering injuries from the same cause.

The Sina Governorate's border areas account for 49% of Kolbar casualties, followed closely by Nowsud in Kermanshah Province, constituting 32% of the total.

Amidst the somber statistics lie poignant tales of individual tragedy. Qubad Karampour, a member of the Supreme Council of Provinces, highlighted the loss of a Kolbar with a master's degree in mathematics, tragically slain while shouldering a television across the border.

Despite the ever-looming specter of danger, Kolbars persist in their perilous pursuits, navigating not only the harsh terrain but also the constant threat of violence from authorities.

As the death toll continues to mount, calls for urgent action to address the root causes of this tragedy grow louder. Beyond mere recognition of their plight, concerted efforts are needed to tackle the underlying issues of unemployment and poverty that compel individuals into such hazardous livelihoods.
