Thousands Celebrate Newroz in Diyarbakir, Southeast Turkey Amidst Political Tensions

In a vibrant display of cultural pride and resilience, thousands gathered in Diyarbakir, southeast Turkey (Bakur), to celebrate Newroz, the Kurdish New Year. Marking the arrival of spring, Newroz holds deep significance for Kurds worldwide, particularly in their homeland.

Year after year, tens of thousands of Kurds from across Turkey converge in Diyarbakir to partake in the festivities. This year's celebration, however, carries added political weight as politician Leyla Zana is set to attend, under close scrutiny from Turkish security forces.

The heart of the festivities is Newroz Square, where bonfires are traditionally lit to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. Yet, as the celebrations wind down, clashes between celebrants and security forces often erupt, fueled by political tensions and the airing of grievances.

Newroz, the oldest national holiday observed by Kurds, commences on March 21st and encompasses a range of traditional rituals and celebrations. Despite the challenges and risks, the spirit of Newroz perseveres, serving as a testament to the enduring cultural identity and resilience of the Kurdish people.
