Tragic Incidents in Iran's Border Regions Claim Lives of Two Kolbars, Leave Several Others Injured

In a series of unfortunate events unfolding in the rugged border regions of Iran, two Kolbars tragically lost their lives while several others sustained severe injuries following falls from high terrain. The incidents have once again highlighted the perilous conditions faced by these cross-border porters in their daily endeavors.

According to reports obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the victims have been identified as Sorush Shukri from Sarvabad and Abu Bakr Makhozi from Sardasht. Abu Bakr Makhozi, a Kolbar from Sardasht, met his untimely demise in the mountainous border region of the city on March 28, 2024. Simultaneously, Sorush Shukri, hailing from Almane village in Sarvabad district, tragically lost his life near Jalaneh after falling from considerable heights.

The tragic incidents didn't spare others either, as at least six additional Kolbars suffered injuries during separate falls. Two Kolbars from Baneh were among the injured, with their conditions reported as severe. They were swiftly airlifted to medical facilities in Sanandaj for urgent treatment.

Further reports indicate that near the Newsud border, close to Paveh, four more Kolbars sustained severe injuries from falls. Prompt response efforts saw them airlifted to medical centers in Kermanshah for medical attention. Among the injured, one individual's condition is listed as critical, adding to the gravity of the situation.

Hengaw Organization for Human Rights is actively engaged in investigating the identities of the remaining six injured Kolbars, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in the perilous border regions where these individuals operate.

The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in the profession of Kolbars, who navigate treacherous terrains in pursuit of their livelihoods, often facing dangers beyond their control. As authorities continue their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of those engaged in cross-border activities, the tragic loss of lives and injuries sustained serve as poignant reminders of the challenges that persist in these remote and hazardous areas.
