Iraqi PM Chairs National Security Council Meeting, Focuses on Cybersecurity and Lebanon Crisis
Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Mohammed Shia al-Sudani chaired a National Security Council meeting on Wednesday, where he emphasized the need for tighter control over the import of electronic devices to combat potential cybersecurity threats. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of vigilance when signing contracts with electronics companies, highlighting the critical role of cybersecurity in safeguarding Iraq’s national security.
During the meeting, the council also turned its attention to the ongoing crisis in Lebanon, following a series of devastating explosions that have rocked the country in recent days. The blasts, which have killed at least 21 people and injured thousands, have caused widespread panic across Lebanon.
On Tuesday, 12 people, including two children, were killed, and around 2,800 others were wounded when hundreds of pagers, reportedly used by Hezbollah members, detonated in various locations. The following day, a second wave of explosions involving walkie-talkies led to nine additional deaths and more than 300 injuries, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
Prime Minister al-Sudani called for urgent medical and humanitarian assistance for the victims of the blasts in Lebanon, urging Iraq to play an active role in relief efforts to support the crisis-stricken country.
The meeting concluded with the council reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Iraq’s cybersecurity defenses and extending humanitarian aid to Lebanon.
