Kurds withdraw from Syrian opposition conference in Turkey
The Kurdish National Council of Syria (KNCS) will not attend the Syrian opposition conference in Istanbul, Turkey, said a member of the delegation from KNCS.
The Syrian National Council, also the opposition, "did not accept the articles in the deal we submitted for the conference which concerned the Kurdish issue in Syria and the rights of the Kurdish people," said Talal Basha in a phone call.

He added that the statement draft submitted for the conference addressed many issues which relate to Syria's support for the Palestinian cause and others "but it does not contain some basic internal issues such as the Kurdish issue, which demand a solution and require the opposition to support it".

Kurds are the second largest ethnic group in Syria and according to some unofficial figures they amount to nearly three million individuals. They accuse Damascus of adopting ethnically-biased policies against them.

During a conference in Tunis last month, the head of Syrian National Council Burhan Ghalyun assured Kurds that they will have a position in the post-Bashar Assad era. Ghalyun also promised a decentralized government and official recognition of Syrian Kurds.

Kurds yearn for constitutional recognition of their ethnicity, culture, language and other rights, as well as a semi-autonomous region within Syria.
