Water shortages exacerbate tensions between Turkey and Syrian Kurds - The Independent

The British Independent newspaper published a report on Sunday by its correspondent Borzou Daragahi, from Tal Abyad in Syria, entitled: "Water shortage adds to bubbling tensions between Turkey and Kurds in northeast Syria."

The reporter talks about a shortage of electricity for months in Tal Abyad. He says this has exacerbated ongoing geopolitical tensions between both the Turkish government, the region's Kurds, and the Syrian regime, and raised fears of another armed conflict.

It is reported that Turkey captured Tal Abyad in 2019 from Kurdish-led Democratic Union Party forces, but the Kurds continue to hold onto the strategic Manbij region to the west, where the main Tishreen Dam is located and generates up to 600 megawatts of power.

The newspaper quoted the local administration in Tal Abyad as saying that the Kurds had stopped 25 megawatts of power supplies from the dam 50 miles away, the quota allocated to Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain, the other Syrian city under Turkish control.
