Bird flu spreads in Iraqi provinces and kills thousands

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced the spread of bird flu in poultry farms. More than 350,000 chickens died in poultry farms in Basra Governorate due to the spread of the bird flu virus.

A spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture, Hamid Nayef, said in a statement that Basra governorate is the most affected of all governorates, especially in Al-Zubayr district. He also added that the owners of poultry farms need to be careful of the spread of the virus as it will cause a lot of damage.

He said that they were able to control the source of bird flu by banishing thousands of infected chickens in the cities of Baghdad, Anbar and Wasit, but in Basra the process has not yet been completed and official statistics will be issued later. .

It is worth noting that in recent years, cases of bird flu have been recorded in the Kurdistan Region twice, the first in 2006 in a field in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, and in 2016 in a poultry farm in Dohuk. To control the disease, all birds in the field at that time were killed. Fortunately, the virus has not yet reached the Kurdistan Region.
