Large demonstrations in Iraq due to power outages

Large-scale demonstrations took place on Saturday among Iraqis to protest against the power outage, and to demand an improvement in the supply of electric power, which is witnessing a significant drop in light of the record high temperatures in the country.

According to local reports, large numbers of demonstrators gathered in Al-Haboubi Square in the center of Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar Governorate, south of the capital, Baghdad, to protest against the power outage.

The demonstrators demanded the Iraqi government to resolve the electricity file, and to refer the negligent and the corrupt to the Iraqi judiciary.

The governorates of Iraq witnessed a complete power outage, yesterday, Friday, due to a technical defect accompanied by sabotage and bombing operations targeting electric power transmission towers.

On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi announced the formation of a higher ministerial committee from the ministries of Electricity, Finance, Interior, Oil and provincial councils, to follow up on the repercussions of this crisis, and it dismissed and punished senior officials in the Ministry of Electricity against the background of this crisis.
