President Nechirvan Barzani welcomes Belgian Parliament's recognition of Yazidi genocide

Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region welcomes the Belgian Parliament’s recognition of the Yazidi genocide, and urges parliaments of countries around the world to take similar measures as it is an important step to heal the wounds of our Yazidi community and bring justice to the victims.

"I welcome the recognition of Yezidi genocide by the Belgian Parliament," President Nechirvan Barzani wrote on his Twitter account.

The President of the Kurdistan Region added:"I urge parliaments of countries across the world to take similar actions as it is an important step to heal the wounds of our Yezidi community and achieve justice for the victims."

On Thursday, the Belgian parliament voted unanimously to recognize the suffering of Yazidis at the hands of the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014 as genocide. The move also included providing assistance to the ethno-religious group.

More than 6,000 Yazidis were kidnapped when ISIS attacked their stronghold in Shingal in Nineveh province, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government's Office for the Rescue of Kidnapped Yazidis. More than 2,000 Yazidis are still missing.
