Oldest Complete Hebrew Bible, Codex Sassoon, Sold for Record $38.1 Million

According to a report by David Gritten for BBC News, the oldest and most complete Hebrew Bible, known as the Codex Sassoon, has been sold at Sotheby's New York for a remarkable $38.1 million, setting a new record for the most valuable manuscript ever sold at auction.

Thought to have been written around 1,100 years ago, the Codex Sassoon contains all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible, including punctuation, vowels, and accents.

This manuscript is an invaluable piece of history, as it is the earliest surviving example of a single manuscript with such comprehensive features.

The buyer of the Codex Sassoon is Alfred Moses, a former US ambassador and lawyer, who purchased it for the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel.

In a statement, Mr. Moses expressed his delight in knowing that this significant artifact now belongs to the Jewish people, recognizing the Hebrew Bible's unparalleled influence throughout history and its foundational role in shaping Western civilization. He further emphasized the importance of providing global access to this historic treasure.
