Kurdistan Regional Government Commits to Serving Families of Martyrs and Anfal Victims

The Kurdistan Regional Government, under the leadership of the Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs, has reaffirmed its commitment to providing extensive services and support to the families of martyrs, victims of the Anfal campaign, and political prisoners. The government has made significant strides in compensating these families for their immense sacrifices and improving their social conditions, including housing and educational opportunities.

In an exclusive interview with the media and information department, Abdullah Mahmoud Ahmed, the Minister of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs, emphasized the importance of these services. "According to the law, the families of martyrs have the right to housing, and it is the responsibility of the regional government and the ministry to take appropriate measures to provide the best services for them."

Minister Ahmed revealed that the Council of Ministers of the Kurdistan Regional Government has recently decided to allocate housing units to the families of martyrs, Anfal victims, and political prisoners, instead of distributing land, and the necessary measures have been taken to implement this decision.

Education is another critical aspect of the government's commitment to these families. Minister Ahmed stated, "Education is very important, and significant steps have been taken in this regard. We have worked closely with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Ministry of Education to provide the best services to the families of martyrs. In the past, these families had to pay cash fees for education, but under the ninth regional government, opportunities and facilitations have improved significantly, and the financial burdens are much lighter."

The government is also actively pursuing international recognition of the genocide committed against the Kurdish people in the past. "We have made substantial progress in this context," Minister Ahmed said. "Most of the issues have been resolved through a decision from the Iraqi federal parliament recognizing the genocide committed by the former Saddam Hussein regime against the Kurdish people. However, the federal government in Baghdad must expedite compensation for the victims, but regrettably, this issue continues to be overlooked."

Minister Ahmed also expressed concerns about the potential recurrence of Anfal campaigns and genocidal acts using chemical weapons against the Kurdish people, citing tragic events such as Halabja, Goktapa, Askar, and the provinces of Erbil and Dohuk. He stressed the importance of making the Anfal issue an international matter and noted recent efforts to raise awareness on a global scale.

The regional government, under the leadership of Mr. Masrour Barzani, is committed to serving, compensating, and assisting the families of martyrs, Anfal victims, and political prisoners. It plans to continue its efforts, coordinating with international bodies, the United Nations Security Council, the European Union, and various governments in the region, to ensure that these families receive the support and recognition they rightfully deserve.
