Major Drug Bust in Kurdistan Region: 50 Kilograms of Methamphetamine Seized, Three Suspects Arrested

In a continued effort to combat the rampant issue of illicit drug trafficking and abuse, the anti-narcotics authority in the Kurdistan Region announced on Sunday a significant seizure of narcotics and the arrest of suspects. The operation resulted in the confiscation of over 50 kilograms of methamphetamine, underscoring the region's determination to crack down on the illegal drug trade.

Local security forces, in collaboration with the anti-narcotics units, also successfully intercepted a substantial haul of 1,097 sheets of Methadone pills, a potent opioid-based painkiller. Arkan Omer, an officer at the Region's Anti-Narcotics Department, confirmed these developments, highlighting the ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of narcotics within the Kurdistan Region.

Crystal methamphetamine, a highly addictive and dangerous substance, remains one of the most trafficked illicit drugs throughout the country. Both Kurdish and Iraqi security forces have consistently reported drug seizures and the apprehension of individuals involved in drug-related activities.

This recent operation follows a similar operation in late August, where authorities seized a staggering 100 kilograms of narcotics, including Captagon pills and Crystal meth. Captagon pills, which exhibit methamphetamine-like effects, have gained notoriety in Iraq in recent years, with users reporting mild euphoria upon consumption. However, this substance is associated with severe health risks, including high blood pressure, hallucinations, blurred vision, and withdrawal symptoms such as irritability and fatigue.

Alarming statistics reveal that 80% of drug users in the Kurdistan Region fall within the age group of 18 to 35, with 10% of users being women and 4% under the age of 18. These figures underscore the urgent need for comprehensive drug awareness and rehabilitation programs within the region.

In a proactive step towards addressing this crisis, the KRG's Ministry of Finance and Economy took action in April 2023 by establishing a Drug and Psychotropic Substances Fund. This initiative aims to provide treatment and support for substance abusers while offering financial rewards to individuals who cooperate with local authorities by reporting illegal drug activities. The fund represents a significant stride in the ongoing battle against drug abuse in the Kurdistan Region.

The anti-narcotics authorities, in conjunction with local security forces, remain committed to tackling the drug epidemic head-on, with an emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation, and the enforcement of strict anti-drug measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the region's residents.
