PKK Claims Responsibility for Ankara Suicide Bombing

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that rocked the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Sunday. The attack resulted in two injuries among security forces stationed at the Ministry of Interior.

In a statement released by the PKK's People's Defense Central Command, it was revealed that the attack was carried out by two individuals, identified as Rojhat Zilan and Erdal Shahin. Additional information regarding the perpetrators is expected to be shared with the public at a later time, according to the statement.

The Turkish Interior Ministry confirmed the incident, with Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya providing details on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). Minister Yerlikaya stated, "This morning, Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023, at around 9:30 a.m., two terrorists in a commercial vehicle came to the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security and carried out an attack on the premises."

He went on to explain that one of the terrorists detonated an explosive device, while the other was neutralized by security forces. Two police officers sustained minor injuries during the attack. Minister Yerlikaya emphasized the government's determination to combat terrorism, stating, "Our struggle will continue relentlessly until the last terrorist is neutralized," in an emphatic all-uppercase typeface.

In response to the incident, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) issued a statement condemning the attack. KRG Spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani reiterated the region's stance against terrorism and extremism, calling for strengthened international cooperation to counteract terrorism and prevent the spread of terrorist ideologies globally.

Additionally, Safin Dizayee, the head of KRG foreign relations, expressed solidarity with Turkey and its people. In a post on social media platform X, Dizayee stated, "We strongly condemn the bombing attack of today in #Ankara. We express our solidarity with the people and Government of Türkiye, and wish a speedy recovery to those injured."

The incident in Ankara underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by Turkey and the region, as authorities work to maintain stability and combat extremist threats. Investigations into the attack are expected to continue as authorities seek to uncover more details about the perpetrators and their motives.
