US President Biden Urges Protection of Al-Shifa Hospital Amidst Gaza City Clashes

In a statement issued today, President Joe Biden has emphasized the critical need to protect Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, as intense fighting continues in close proximity to the facility. The hospital, Gaza's largest, has become a focal point in the conflict, with dire humanitarian implications.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has joined the call, urging Israel to take all necessary measures to safeguard civilians in Gaza. He has also advocated for an urgent humanitarian pause to address the worsening situation.

Israel alleges that Hamas is operating a command center beneath Al-Shifa, an accusation vehemently denied by both the hospital and Hamas. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the hospital is on the brink of becoming a makeshift cemetery, with bodies accumulating inside and outside its premises.

The UN reports that dozens of premature babies and 45 kidney patients requiring dialysis are unable to receive proper treatment due to a lack of power. Responding to these urgent needs, the Israeli military states that it is coordinating the transfer of incubators from a hospital in Israel to Gaza.

The current round of violence began with Hamas attacks on October 7, prompting Israeli airstrikes. The toll from these events includes 1,200 fatalities and over 200 individuals taken hostage. Since then, the Hamas-run health ministry claims that more than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza, including over 4,500 children.

As tensions escalate and concerns for the humanitarian situation intensify, the international community is closely watching developments in Gaza and advocating for immediate actions to alleviate the crisis.
