U.S. Treasury Sanctions Kata'ib Hezbollah Members and Iranian National

In a significant move on Friday, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on five Iraqi citizens associated with Kata'ib Hezbollah (KH), a designated terrorist organization, and an Iranian national linked to the armed group. Brian E. Nelson, a senior U.S. Treasury official, emphasized that this action sends a stern message to Kata'ib Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups exploiting the situation in Gaza, asserting that the United States will employ all available measures to hold such actors accountable.

The sanctioned individuals include Imad Naji al-Bahadli, Habib Hasan Mughamis Darraji, Ja’afar al-Husayni, Khalid Kadhim Jasim al-Skeni, Basim Mohammad Hasab al-Majidi, and Mojtaba Jahandust. Notably, Mojtaba Jahandust, an Iranian national, was involved in facilitating the travel and training of KH fighters in Iran.

The sanctions carry implications for any entity or U.S. citizen engaging in financial transactions with the designated individuals, as they may face enforcement actions. The measures also block any properties and interests in the U.S. where the sanctioned persons have a significant stake.

Kata'ib Hezbollah, labeled a terror organization by the U.S. in 2009, has been accused of orchestrating recent attacks against the United States and its allies in Iraq and Syria. The group is allegedly funded and supported by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF).

The announcement comes amidst a series of attacks attributed to the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an alliance of Shiite paramilitary groups, including KH, responsible for drone and missile strikes on U.S. and Coalition bases in the region. The IRI, believed to be linked to Iran, has claimed responsibility for over 55 attacks on American installations since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In response to the sanctions, Kata'ib Hezbollah issued a warning on Telegram, stating that if the Gaza siege persists, they will take measures to close American interests in Iraq and disrupt them in the region.

The situation remains tense, with ongoing concerns about regional security and stability amid the escalating conflict dynamics.
