Kurdistan Region Leaders Address Climate Concerns at COP28 Conference in Dubai

In a significant move to address growing environmental concerns, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani have joined global leaders at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP28, kicking off today in Expo City, Dubai.

Expressing deep concerns over the impact of climate change on the region, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani highlighted the multifaceted challenges faced by Kurdistan. Speaking at the MEPS Forum 2023 in Duhok last month, he emphasized, "We are concerned. It's not just about water scarcity. There are many factors. Of course, water is the main concern."

One of the primary issues raised by the Prime Minister was the alteration of water flow due to the construction of dams and diversions of rivers, resulting in decreased water inflow into Iraq. He underscored the importance of recognizing these environmental challenges, particularly as they affect the Kurdistan Region and the broader Iraqi territory.

"In Kurdistan, we have our own resources. But is it taken seriously? Unfortunately, not to the extent that it should be. But it ought to be," stated Prime Minister Barzani.

The COP28 conference, spanning from November 30 to December 12, 2023, will see leaders from across the globe engaging in discussions aimed at addressing climate change, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and curbing global warming. The conference seeks to foster international collaboration to achieve a consensus on the most pressing environmental issues.

President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani's participation underscores the Kurdistan Region's commitment to actively contribute to global efforts in combating climate change. As the conference progresses, the world watches with anticipation as leaders strive to forge solutions for a sustainable future.
