Iraq Condemns US Airstrikes on Hashd al-Shaabi Bases as a Violation of Sovereignty

Iraq's National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, strongly criticized the United States on Wednesday, declaring the recent airstrikes on Hashd al-Shaabi bases and headquarters as a hostile act and a blatant violation of Iraqi sovereignty. Al-Araji expressed his concern during a statement on X, emphasizing that the attacks on Hashd's headquarters in Al-Qaim and Jurf Al-Sakhar were assaults that did not contribute to calming the situation in the region.

He urged the American side to redirect its efforts towards pressuring an end to the ongoing aggression against Gaza instead of targeting and bombing an Iraqi national institution's headquarters. Al-Araji stressed the need for diplomatic solutions and dialogue to resolve conflicts rather than resorting to military actions that further escalate tensions.

The US forces conducted airstrikes on Wednesday, targeting pro-Iran Kataib Hezbollah forces in Iraq. The airstrikes were in response to recent attacks by the militia on US forces in the region. The decision to carry out these airstrikes follows the assault on the Ain al-Asad base in Iraq last Saturday, where US troops are stationed.

During the attack on Ain al-Asad base, militants supported by Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles and rockets, resulting in injuries to four US personnel. In response, the US government opted for targeted airstrikes against Kataib Hezbollah, which it holds responsible for the attacks on American forces.

The situation underscores the escalating tensions between the United States and pro-Iran factions in Iraq. Al-Araji's condemnation of the airstrikes highlights Iraq's stance on foreign military actions within its borders, emphasizing the need for respecting national sovereignty and pursuing diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts. The international community closely watches the developments as concerns grow over the potential for further escalation in the already volatile region.
