The head of Iraq’ Electoral Commission said today that the end of the work of the commission and the failure to elect new a one means there will be a constitutional vacuum and this will confuse the institution and the electoral process in the country.
Faraj al-Haidari said: "The first extension of the work of the Electoral Commission was legal because it was done according to the decision of the Iraqi Council of Representatives. The solution lies in two methods, either the formation of a new national electoral commission during July or extend the work of the commission to develop the current electoral process in the country, and make preparations for provincial elections."

Haidari expressed his hope that the formation of the electoral commission will be done to prepare for the elections of Kurdistan’s provinces and other Iraqi provincial councils.

The Iraqi parliament voted with majority to extend the work of the Electoral Commission on April 19 for three months until the experts committee elected a new board of commissioners.

The Electoral Commission in Iraq was formed according to the order of the Coalition Provisional Authority Order 92 in 2004 to be the only electoral authority in Iraq. It is a professional, non-partisan, and state-owned body, independent from the executive, legislative, and judicial powers.
