Kurdistan Region to Construct Largest Solar Power Station in Iraq

In a significant development for renewable energy, the Kurdistan Regional Government announced today the groundbreaking ceremony for a new solar power station. Set to become the largest solar facility in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, the project marks a major stride towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.

The Ministry of Electricity in the Kurdistan Region government expressed its enthusiasm for the venture, highlighting its commitment to environmental protection and minimizing the adverse effects of traditional power generation methods. With a capacity of 25 megawatts, the solar power station will be equipped with a substantial number of panels, harnessing the sun's energy in an eco-friendly manner.

One of the primary goals of the Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government is to expand the share of solar energy in the region's electricity production. Currently, approximately 20% to 30% of the Kurdistan Region's power is generated from solar sources. By implementing similar initiatives and increasing solar capacity, the government aims to raise this percentage significantly.

The ambitious project, estimated to cost 100 million dollars, will be constructed over an area spanning 590 dunams and is projected to be completed within a year. Once operational, the electricity generated by the solar power station will be seamlessly integrated into the national power grid, further contributing to the region's energy independence and sustainability.

The Kurdistan Region already houses two existing solar power stations, each with a capacity of 3 megawatts. However, the government's commitment to renewable energy has prompted further investments. In a separate decision, authorities have greenlit the construction of a 100-megawatt power station in the Suran area, with an estimated cost of 235 billion dinars.

The move towards solar power is a significant step in diversifying the energy mix and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels. The Kurdistan Regional Government's proactive approach to renewable energy showcases its dedication to a greener future, highlighting the region's commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.

As construction commences, stakeholders and citizens alike eagerly anticipate the completion of the project, looking forward to the positive impact it will have on the Kurdistan Region's energy landscape.
