US-Led Coalition Calls for Immediate Ceasefire Amid Escalating Clashes in Northeast Syria

40 Lives Lost in Recent Violent Clashes, Concerns Rise Over Daesh (ISIS) Resurgence

In the midst of escalating clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and tribal fighters in northeast Syria, the US-led Coalition has issued a resounding call for an immediate cessation of violence in the region. The statement from the Global Coalition, released on Thursday, comes in response to the tragic loss of 40 lives during recent clashes between the SDF and other armed groups.

The statement from the Combined Joint Task Force — Operation Inherent Resolve underscores the Coalition's commitment to closely monitor events in northeast Syria and work alongside the Syrian Defense Forces (SDF) to ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh (ISIS).

Expressing deep concern over the current turmoil, the Coalition emphasized that the ongoing violence creates instability and heightens the risk of Daesh resurgence in the region. The Coalition's message is clear: the violence in northeast Syria must cease, and efforts should be refocused on creating peace and stability in the area, free from the looming threat of Daesh.

Reiterating their commitment to restoring peace and stability to the region, the Coalition's core mission remains advising, assisting, and empowering partner forces to secure the enduring defeat of ISIS.

The recent clashes have primarily taken place in select areas of Deir ez-Zor's countryside, involving SDF forces and members of the Military Council. Notably, the latter successfully gained control of the Ahmed al-Khabil (Abu Khawla) palace in the village of al-Rabidah, north of Deir ez-Zor.

In response to the unfolding crisis, the Deir ez-Zor Military Council has appointed Turki Dhari al-Khalaf, known as Abu Laith Khasham, as the interim commander, succeeding Abu Khawla.

Simultaneously, protests against the SDF have erupted within the Deir ez-Zor countryside, with demonstrators resorting to blocking roads with burning tires to voice their grievances.

Tragically, on Wednesday, a checkpoint operated by the SDF in northern Syria came under attack, resulting in the loss of two SDF fighters and six tribesmen in Al-Harejah town, located in northern Deir ez-Zor.

Adding complexity to the situation, the SDF officially confirmed the removal of Deir ez-Zor Military Council's commander, Ahmed Al-Khubail, known as Abu Khawla. This decision followed his arrest earlier in the week, with charges including involvement in criminal offenses such as drug trafficking, mismanagement of the security situation, and exacerbating the activities of IS cells. The situation in northeast Syria remains fluid, and the international community is closely watching for developments in the region.
