Tensions Escalate as Turkish Foreign Minister Accuses PUK of Collaborating with PKK

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has publicly accused the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of having links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), alleging an alliance aimed at targeting the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). In a statement to Turkish journalists, Fidan asserted that the PKK, a designated terrorist organization in Turkey, is actively working against both Turkey and the Erbil government.

Fidan claimed, "You know that the PKK is targeting the Erbil government in addition to Turkey," emphasizing an alleged collaboration between the PUK and the PKK with the shared goal of opposing the KRG. The Foreign Minister's accusations come amidst strained relations between Turkey and the PUK, marking an escalation in the ongoing tensions in the region.

Addressing the PKK's territorial presence, Fidan highlighted the group's control over significant areas in Iraq. He pointed out, "the PKK does not control a square meter of territory in Turkey, but now in Iraq has taken control of a large area of territory, now in Sinjar and Makhmur territory." Fidan expressed concern over the PKK's influence in regions such as Sulaymaniyah, Zakho, and Qandil, describing the areas as "occupied" territory, posing a threat to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region's sovereignty.

Describing the PKK as an "uncontrolled armed organization," Fidan urged joint efforts from both Baghdad and Erbil to address the issue. He conveyed Turkey's firm stance on the matter, stating, "If you take ownership of the fight against the PKK, then we will have no reason to show concern."

In response to the heightened tensions, Turkey extended its ban on flights to and from Sulaymaniyah International Airport until June 22, 2024, citing the increased PKK presence in the region as the reason for the continued suspension of flights. The strained relations between Turkey and the PUK, coupled with Fidan's accusations, raise concerns about the potential for further escalation and the impact on regional stability. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging diplomatic efforts to address the complex dynamics in the Kurdistan region.
