KRG President Nechirvan Barzani Commemorates 33rd Anniversary of Kurdistan Uprising, Stresses Unity Against Threats to Federalism

Marking the 33rd anniversary of the 1991 Kurdish uprising, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the importance of unity in the face of threats to federalism and constitutional status. In a statement issued on Tuesday, President Barzani paid tribute to the memory of the martyrs of the uprising, highlighting their role in ending the era of oppression under dictatorship.

The uprising, which began on March 5, 1991, in Ranya, symbolized the determination of the Kurdish people for freedom and prosperity. President Barzani emphasized that while the goals of the uprising were achieved through unity and solidarity, they have yet to be fully enshrined in the constitution of Federal Iraq.

President Barzani underscored the ongoing significance of unity and solidarity in protecting the gains of the uprising. He warned against the bitter experiences of conflict and division, urging all parties to learn from the lessons of history and work towards a better future.

The 1991 uprising, which saw the participation of diverse ethnic and religious communities in the Kurdistan Region, holds a significant place in Kurdish history. Residents in Ranya city, where the uprising first erupted, commemorated the day with various cultural events on Sunday.

The anniversary comes amidst decades of oppression and genocide inflicted by the former regime, which was overthrown in 2003. President Barzani's message serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Kurdish people and the ongoing struggle to preserve their values and principles.

As the region commemorates this pivotal moment in its history, President Barzani called on all sides to work together to uphold the spirit of the uprising and build a better future for Kurdistan.
